Messenger Secure Storage exports — why recent chats may be missing
If your Facebook ZIP has older Messenger threads but not the recent chats you see in the app, you are often hitting a Meta export limitation (Secure Storage / end-to-end encryption), not a fault in FbZip. This guide explains what is going on and how to get a usable archive with FbZip Chat Archive.
What “Secure Storage” means for downloads
Meta may store some Messenger data in ways that are not fully included in the standard Download Your Information ZIP—especially conversations that use end-to-end encryption or device-bound secure storage. The mobile app can still show those messages; the downloadable archive may not.
- Common symptom: Export contains older inbox folders, but the last weeks or months of chats are thin or missing.
- Not a license bug: Paying for Chat Archive unlocks conversion of what is in the ZIP. It cannot invent messages Meta never put in the export.
- FbZip role: We parse the Messenger / WhatsApp data that is present and build a searchable offline archive.
What to request from Meta
- Follow How to download your Facebook export on desktop.
- Include Messages (and media if you need photos/video).
- Prefer JSON when Meta offers a format choice.
- Use All time (or the widest range you need) and wait for the email that the ZIP is ready—large accounts can take days.
- If Meta shows options related to secure or encrypted message backups, enable whatever allows the fullest downloadable copy for your account (wording varies by region and app version).
Download all ZIP parts if Meta splits the export. Upload every part to the same conversion in /webv/.
Quick check: is the data in the ZIP?
- Sign in at /webv/ → Import + Convert → upload the export.
- Build a chat preview (free: 1 conversation / 500 messages) or open Download Tools → Chat Archive.
- If the recent thread you care about never appears in the preview list, it is likely absent from Meta’s ZIP—re-request the export or use Meta’s in-app tools for that conversation.
- If the thread is present, buy a Chat Archive or Complete license for the full offline ZIP, then open it in the free desktop app (Windows or Linux).
WhatsApp note
WhatsApp per-chat exports from the phone are different from Facebook Messenger Secure Storage. For WhatsApp, export the chat from the mobile app, then upload that file on Import + Convert. See the Chat Archive guide.
